Artificial Grass and Dogs: How to Keep Pet Turf Clean, Fresh and Hair-Free
Share
Artificial grass is one of the best things you can put down if you have a dog. No muddy paws, no dug-up patches and no brown spots. But it isn't maintenance-free. Pet hair, odour and everyday debris build up in the fibres faster than most owners expect, and if they're left too long the lawn starts to look tired and smell less than fresh.
Here's a simple routine that keeps pet turf clean without a lot of effort.
Daily: pick up solids
Remove droppings as soon as you can, using a bag or scoop. Don't try to sweep them up. Solids need to come out by hand first, before any sweeping or rinsing.
Weekly: rinse the toilet area
Dogs usually pick one or two favourite spots. Give those areas a good hose-down once a week, or more often in hot weather, to flush urine down through the turf and out through the drainage. In warmer months a quick daily rinse of the main spot makes a big difference to odour.
If smell lingers, use an enzyme-based cleaner made for artificial turf and follow the label instructions. Avoid harsh household chemicals and bleach, which can damage the fibres and aren't great for paws.
Weekly or fortnightly: sweep out hair and debris
Dog hair is the hidden problem with pet turf. It works its way down between the fibres, mats together with leaves and dust, and gives the lawn a dull, flattened look. Raking barely touches it, and a blower just moves it to another corner.
A powered artificial lawn sweeper is the fastest fix. Its rotating brush lifts the fibres and pulls hair, leaves and grit up into a collection bag. You'll be surprised how much comes out the first time. Most owners find a sweep every week or two keeps on top of it, and more often during shedding season.
For backyards up to 150 m², the corded Garland 302E does the job. For bigger yards up to 350 m², the cordless Garland 402W. For smaller dog runs, side paths and edges, the compact cordless Garland 141W gets into tight spots.
Monthly: lift high-traffic areas
Running paths along fences and favourite lying spots get flattened over time. A thorough sweep across those areas, working against the direction the fibres lean, brushes them back upright so the lawn looks even again.
A few extra tips
- Sweep before you rinse. Wet hair clumps and sticks, so clear the hair first, then hose.
- Check under shade. Areas that stay damp can hold odour longer, so give them an extra rinse.
- Keep the brush in good shape. Pet hair wears sweeper bristles over time. If your sweeper starts leaving hair behind, it may be time for a replacement brush head.
