Get Your Artificial Lawn Christmas-Ready: A Pre-Summer Clean-Up Checklist
Share
For most Australians, Christmas means the backyard: barbecues, backyard cricket, kids running around and family staying over. If you've got artificial grass, it's the centrepiece of all of it, so it's worth giving it a proper clean-up before the guests arrive.
Spring storms, falling leaves and months of everyday use leave more in the turf than you'd think. Work through this checklist in late November or early December and your lawn will look its best right through the holidays.
1. Clear the yard
Move outdoor furniture, toys, pots and the barbecue off the turf so you can reach every corner. It's also a good chance to check underneath for flattened patches or discolouration.
2. Pick up the big debris
Remove sticks, bark, seed pods, palm fronds and anything else large by hand. If you have a dog, give the yard a thorough pick-up first.
3. Give it a deep sweep
This is the step that makes the biggest visible difference. Leaves, dust, grit and hair sink down between the fibres over the year, flattening the pile and dulling the colour. A powered artificial lawn sweeper lifts the fibres and pulls all of that up into a collection bag, leaving the turf looking full and fresh again.
Use it like a vacuum cleaner: push forward and pull back in overlapping strokes as you work across the lawn in rows. Then give high-traffic areas such as paths, play areas and in front of doors a few extra strokes to stand the fibres back up.
4. Freshen up with a rinse
Once the debris is out, hose the lawn down to wash away dust and pollen. If you have pets, give their favourite spots a thorough rinse, and use an artificial-turf enzyme cleaner if there's any lingering odour.
5. Check the edges and drainage
Clear leaf build-up along fences and garden beds, and make sure drainage points aren't blocked. Summer storms can arrive with little warning, and you want water running off, not pooling.
6. Protect it from heat
Artificial grass can get hot in direct summer sun. Don't place hot items like portable barbecues, fire pits or glass that can focus sunlight directly on the turf. A quick hose-down before guests arrive cools the surface on hot days.
7. Keep a sweeper handy through the holidays
After a big get-together there's usually confetti, food scraps, bottle caps and plenty of crumbs. A quick sweep the next morning has the lawn back to normal in minutes, ready for Boxing Day.
