Synthetic Turf for Schools: The Complete Australian Guide to Maintenance, Safety & Equipment
Share
Synthetic turf has become the go-to playground surface for Australian schools and childcare centres. It's durable and low-maintenance, but low-maintenance isn't no-maintenance. Looking after it well is the difference between a surface that lasts 8–10 years and one that needs replacing in five.
Why Schools Choose Synthetic Turf
- All-weather use: no mud or closed grounds after rain
- Consistent surface: fewer trips and falls
- No irrigation: big water savings
- Year-round green regardless of foot traffic
- No mowing, fertilising or reseeding
What School Turf Has to Cope With
- Hundreds of children on the same surface every day
- Leaves, seeds and food scraps building up
- Flattened fibres reducing cushioning
- Sand infill shifting and creating uneven patches
- Bacteria and mould without regular cleaning
Recommended Maintenance Schedule
Daily (5–10 minutes)
- Pick up litter, food scraps and hazardous objects
- Spot-clean spills straight away
Weekly (20–30 minutes)
- Sweep with an artificial lawn sweeper to remove embedded debris, lift fibres and level infill
- Check for tears, lifting seams and blocked drainage
Monthly
- Sweep in several directions to fully restore the pile
- Top up infill in worn areas
- Inspect edges and joins
Annually
- Professional deep clean and infill assessment
- Record the turf's condition for warranty purposes
Choosing a Sweeper for Your School
Leaf blowers scatter debris and rakes can damage fibres. A purpose-built artificial lawn sweeper removes debris, lifts fibres and levels infill in one pass. Look for:
- Low noise so it can run during school hours
- Cordless operation to avoid trip hazards
- Enough runtime to cover your grounds in one session
- Simple controls for grounds staff

Safety Considerations
Critical Fall Height
Turf under playground equipment must meet the Critical Fall Height requirements of AS 4422:2016. Keeping fibres upright and infill level is essential to staying compliant over time.
Surface Temperature
Synthetic turf heats up in direct sun. Provide shade over high-use areas, schedule summer play for cooler times, and wet the surface briefly before use on hot days.
Hygiene
Sweep at least weekly (twice weekly in busy areas), use an approved turf sanitiser monthly, and keep a log of maintenance for compliance.
